Anyway you are right and I should have been more precise: they never bargain a bump from a flight in a given travel class (Y not to name it) for another flight in a higher class (W/J).

Now I guess what your family got was an opup though it requires more details on your side to validate that guess. Maybe they were originally booked in the highest Y fare, maybe they were rebooked in the highest Y fare etc.
