That is not true. My kids and wife where bumped a few months back on a flight to Jo'Burg and they got in the end a routing via Paris in Economy Premium or whatever they call it. So that was a 'upgrade' not the big one but still an upgrade.

Anyway you are right and I should have been more precise: they never bargain a bump from a flight in a given travel class (Y not to name it) for another flight in a higher class (W/J).
Now I guess what your family got was an opup though it requires more details on your side to validate that guess. Maybe they were originally booked in the highest Y fare, maybe they were rebooked in the highest Y fare etc.
