Oh there definitely is. As I've mentioned before, as PPS I've never been preassigned more than three rows from the front of the plane in Y. Even when I don't do an advanced check-in. That's why my recommendation for those without PPS is to do, if you can, a phone check-in. That way you can try to ask the CSR to give you a better seat, they can override the automated allocations.
