In my view, a few extra hundred bucks a year is not worth a hassle of having multiple cards and thinking where to put a charge. I love to keep things simple and save time for other more important stuff.
I do not read it as him telling you to use multiple cards. I read it as him saying dump the Amex all together and put the spend on a card with more valuable rewards than MR. Chase quickly comes to mind
