They are, but the delay can be quite high - especially for a busy pharmacy that processes the day's electronic prescription set in an arbitrary order. For anything wanted in the next day or two, I've always been advised to collect the paper and walk it to the pharmacy myself. I can well imagine something being faxed (so, transmitted synchronously) rather than waiting for the rather asynchronous electronic prescription processing and dispensing.

But yes, more advanced means than paper facsimile may have been involved.
