There is, of course, the corollary ... that we are now heading for a World where ownership of a globally-enabled cell-phone is getting close to mandatory.
I don't actually NEED one right now. I have a Jersey-enabled PAYG, which seems to work in UK as well. But I make about 3 calls a year, and receive none [just a few airline text messages].
