That's probably a worse option. Even though CX is generous with op-ups compared to many other carriers, it's never guaranteed. The fact that it's a busy time of year doesn't mean that J won't be fully booked with cash or redemption tickets by the time you travel. If you've got the miles and award availability to book everyone into the same J cabin now, I'd do that on the more direct routing and then now have to stress as departure approaches about whether you're going to all be in the same cabin together.
