The Storfjord Hotel in Glomset, near Ålesund, Norway
Introduction A really special hotel on the West Coast of Norway. It's built on a clifftop with a view of the fjord and Sunnmøre Alps. Design is like a cosy log cabin and it has that Scandinavian 'hygge' feeling. It is part of Small Luxury Hotels of the World. Check In The one thing that let this hotel down was the service on arrival. A particular member of staff (though well meaning!) seemed to lack the confidence that you expect from five star service. She was unsure about the excursions we'd booked for starters and then expected us to take our luggage to our room ourselves, across the snow and up the stairs. It wasn't a great start but everything improved greatly from there. Room We'd booked a junior suite with a fjord view (you must get the fjord view!). It was a gorgoeus log cabin style feel with wood clad walls. However, it didn't quite look like the junior suite as advertised on the website and was smaller than I expected it to be. A few reviews I saw said there was no fridge or room service. The former has definitely changed as we had a fridge with complimentary water. I believe the latter has changed. We didn't order food to the room but they were certainly happy to bring drinks. The highlight was the gorgeous balcony and view!! Service I was told to managed my expectations about service in Norway but after the initial unconfident start we found the service excellent from the other members of staff. They did occassionally need reminding when we ordered drinks etc but overall it was better than expected. Dining Dining is a highlight at the Storfjord as ingredients are fresh and locally sourced. The hotel is quite far from the main town so it's advisable to take most of your meals there. For dinner they serve a four course set menu but they are very flexible. My friend is particular about food and they were able to accomodate all her needs. For lunch they can make simple but tasty soups, salad and sandwiches. Breakfast is a small but perfectly formed buffet and eggs can be made to order. The dining room is beautiful with open fires and a view of the fjords. Location You can't beat this beautiful location with the view of the fjords. The drive from the airport is about 45 minutes and the hotel sent a driver for us so it was all very easy. You are miles from anywhere so expect a relaxing holiday. During the summer months there's beautiful hikes too. Spa The spa is a real highlight of the hotel though if you want to treaments book in advance as there's no in house therapist. The hot tub in the snow is a must! Overall Apart from a few mild service issues I highly recommend this hotel. Do manage your expectations as this is a cosy boutique hotel not a super luxury hotel.
