About upgrading (paid) at gate or on board

I do apologize as I know these topics are usually covered in the ultimate upgrade thread but...

My fiancee and I are honeymooning in Europe and Africa beginning Aug. 1. We are departing BA out of Chicago and took the advice of others on this board to NOT request an upgrade just because it's our honeymoon. We were told to play it coy instead.

So whne we booked our tickets I was chatting with the agent and mentioned it was our honeymoon and she noted that in our itinerary we received via email. Very nice of her, not sure if it will help us, but who knows.

My question: If we do not get upgraded at the gate out of the goodness of the flight crew's heart when we check in, what would be the best way to go about inquiring about a PAID upgrade? At the gate? On board? Does anyone know the price of this in American dollars (on average) and would it be a cash thing or could we use credit cards?

I apologize in advance if this has been asked before, but as a stressed out bride-to-be with 40 days to go, I am trying to get all the info gathered that I can!

Thanks!
Amy
