There are plenty of restaurants and bars in the area and of course it's perfectly safe, just like every other part of Stockholm. I've previously stayed at Royal Viking which is short walk from Waterfront and never had any issue - even when arriving "drunk aroud 3am" (well, actually I think it was 2 am, but whatever ).
