Interesting. The verbiage on the site has always been that "only the eligible MVPG member may call to request replacement GGU" or something like that. If this is true, it's a major devaluation...this is a nice option to "hold space" when combined with the free cancel. Of course, I can also see AS side of the coin, that holding space can cost them money.
A nicer happy medium would be that GGU become non-refundable if canceled after a certain timeline (say 30 days prior to departure or something).
My last flight canceling/redepositing GGU was back in November. At that time, the GGU were re-deposited without question, but it took some extra time because one direction was upgraded with GGU and the other with status, and the agent had to do some checking for audit trail purposes.
