Delta can and will extend tickets. Not sure of the restrictions, but I had a ticket with an expiration date 6 months in the future and used it to buy a ticket 8 months in the future. I did have to escalate but a supervisor did it. So create a compelling case and you may be lucky.
This seems to be the case. I had two tickets issued last summer and agent was able to exchange for travel this summer (about 25 days past original validity).
