I've definitely noticed the basic economy tax increasing drastically. I remember when it was $25 RT, and now I'm seeing some that are $90 RT.
There are two big things that really frustrate me about basic economy. The first being that I'm based in a small airport. There are no low cost carriers here, but there are two other big airlines at my airport. Despite the absence of spirit or Southwest, basic economy fares are the norm, which runs counter to their claim of "we're doing this to remain competitive!!"
Second, basic economy punishes elites and really makes status/loyalty much less worthwhile. Why are they punishing their loyal customers with a "tax" to access some, or at worst have a "chance to access," of their elite benefits? Basic economy was marketed as a way to get simply price minded flyers, but instead it's just a giant squeeze on the frequent travelers.
