Have stayed at a number of (non-chain) hotels in continental Europe over the past three years. Normally a king/double bed is two singles pushed together, with seperate base sheets and seperate (narrow) duvets - not very "sociable"

In the US, you tend to know how to do big beds - the rest of the world tends to take a while to catch on...
