Would there be any restaurants etc. open throughout the night?
Your gonna be miserable no matter what, but taking the last train to MXP then hanging out at the airport will leave you miserable for days. I do not know why people don't provide information for other people to help them, like when are you going, and things like that. Prices vary considerably during the year, from $90 per night to $500 per night, so no one can really help. If you wait to the last minute you might pay $700 per night. The alternative of hanging out at the airport doesn't work.

The almost universal recommendation when flying out of MXP is to stay at the MXP Sheraton. It's inside the airport. You can sleep as late as you dare. Depending on the time of the year, you will be standing outside in the cold, waiting for a shuttle bus that will take you to five hotels over half an hour before it then makes multiple stops at the airport. During this time you body will be screening. Since there' not much to do in Milano but eat, get to the Sheraton, go to the spa, get into the hot tub, relax, take your sleeping aid of choice and get to bed early. When you awake, take the elevator down, the checkin counters are right in front of you. No need to be outside in the cold, stopping at ten locations in a mini van, freezing every time the driver opens the door to let in more people.

Don't overnight in the airport. Stay at the Sheraton MXP, get to bed early, and you'll be OK.
