From what I could read it that Delta was looking for the 1000 mile range when it sent out its request. If a plane is more capable, there is nothing holding them back from using the capability.
There are a number of articles online that indicate that DL would have to pay extra to go beyond 1000 miles. Maybe they're all mistaken, but it seems like that is the case.
