guess with Qantas it *definitely* comes down to where you're wanting to go as to award redemption availability. For instance getting redemption flights to SIN are generally available at the drop of a hat (in my experience, having clocked up half a dozen in the past 18 months or so). Whereas other destinations have been much more difficult to redeem flights to.
That said, it's rare when I'm comparing redemptions on Qantas to redemptions on Singapore Airlines for there to be better availability on Qantas, especially on other Asian destinations (I guess that's the joys of connecting flights). So given I have status with QF and no status with SQ it is I guess somewhat eye opening from that aspect. For the North American flights I can't really comment, but for my purposes QF has been good for me (and plenty of 10,000 point discounts on offer along the way too 
)
In my experience, J reward availability ex SIN is very limited. F is slightly better, but Y is often available. BA's J & F availability is better but not good.
SQ's J availability is much superior to QF's and can often be booked at the last minute. I can't see the QF J situation improving since capacity has been reduced with the introduction of skybeds.
