Kiwi sells two seperate tickets with two seperate PNRs, but Kiwi guarantees the connection and Kiwi will book you a new flight if you miss your connection (although I have read that their customer service is not the greatest). I really like KL, so I usually just book two seperate tickets with a day or two in KL in between flights, rather than roll the dice on a same day connection. My friend tried to book a same day self connection on AirAsia, and AirAsia changed his first flight time, putting him on a new flight that left 12 hours later, changing his 13 hour self connection to a bit over one. He ended up demanding a refund from AirAsia for his first flight and reconfigured his travel plans.
India to Kunming is tricky - looked into this a couple of months ago. Ended up doing BOM to CKG on separate tickets (Thai J + Thai Smile = hassle). Flew to Kunming from CKG in the end.

Ya, only connected on AirAsia once. Worked fine that time - but sounds like you have plenty of experience!

Interesting info regarding Kiwi - never realised someone would offer something like this.
