We just spent 5 days here with our kids over Christmas and I feel about the same way you do. The rooms are great and the location is perfect if you need to be in midtown. It feels very similar to the new FS downtown where we stayed on our previous visit, but the service is not as good. All in all, it is pretty good for NYC. Thanks for the review.
