What you're seeing is most likely UA trying to move traffic away from EWR to free up seats for connections from destinations where it's not as convenient to go via Canada (including EWR O/D traffic)
I would assume though UA receives less money than if I were to fly UA, right?
My point being, the DEL/BOM-EWR segment seems profitable enough for them. Sure, I guess many transfer. But we are still talking about NYC metro, a number of travelers are bound to stop there.
Where there is profitability, competitors try to invade.
