Need Advice on what to do with award ticket won't use (to merge)

I have two award tickets booked to cover a round trip flight I no longer need to take. I have some questions about the best way to proceed knowing I may not recover miles in the end. My understanding of the award ticket rules is that I can change the ticket, but only if the cities remain the same and just changing the date? If I cancel outright or change the cities, I would have to pay a 150 fee to get miles redeposited? There is a small possibility I would make this same trip sometime next fall, but have no idea of the dates, so would I just randomly pick something and change again in fall? If I did this, when is the closet to the flight you can be to make the change? I ask this because the original flight is into Cleveland in February, so aways the change of snow affecting it and potential flight could be canceled anyway which might solve the problem for me since I am assuming if flight is cancelled, I would get miles back. Also, both legs of the trip have difference Confirmation numbers, so whatever i do, each one is independent of the other, correct? Meaning if paid fee to redeposit, would have to pay it twice? These were super save awards so is probably not worth it to pay fee to deposit.
