I always break up my US "TP-run" trips and take a day in each city, essentially making it a mini-travelling holiday to visit a few places. Also stops you from getting flying-fatigue! You can manually force it using ITA matrix if you're struggling to compare the splits that you're looking for. Just make sure the layovers are under 24hrs.
