Still could be the simplest way to solve this problem. Prob have a backup to the US skype number in case not enough credits etc to call back overseas from Oz.
BA Gold gets a UK freephone number, which is free from Skype anywhere in the world.

Agree, it's getting better but may not be good enough to maintain a wifi phone call. Three UK charges the UK local rate to call the UK when the SIM is physically in Australia, something similar may exist with other operators. Also lots of people selling SIMs at SYD arrivals.
