CX views on entering Australia on a one way?

I'm looking at using CX flying LHr-HKG-MEL open jaw, returning BKK-HKG-LHR. The Australian High Comission in the uk states on their website:

Can I travel to Australia on a one way ticket?
There is no requirement to have a return ticket when you arrive in Australia. However officers at the border need to be satisfied that visitors, working holiday maker and temporary residents are intending to and have the means to depart Australia before their visa expires. While not a mandatory requirement, you may wish to carry a copy of your bank statement to demonstrate you have sufficient funds to purchase an airline ticket to depart Australia.
So I was following that line in assuming I wouldn't have a problem, but then it occurred to me that the first step is convincing the airline that its ok to not have proof of onward travel in place.

Does anyone have any experience of flying one way into OZ with CX?
