IMHO, AA owes you for the cost of the leg you didn't fly, assuming you actually canceled it.
As your luggage made it, I am wondering if you canceled whatever alternative flight you were booked on.
Why didn't you get your luggage when you decide to drive?
Since the flights for that day were canceled, you should have been able to get it from baggage claim
