This is something I've wondered. If a flight is delayed because of a mechanical problem and then cancelled because of weather, is there recourse for the passenger or is it considered weather and the passenger is SOL.

I'm pretty sure they will continue to put you on the next flight until a flight goes and you arrive at your destination. I don't think they will ever just say "sorry, we tried, you're on your own".
If it is mechanical though they would put you up in a hotel, pay for meals, and occasionally allow alternative transportation reimbursement. Maybe I'm thinking of the old AA where they used to do that.
