BA Amex: Where can I use it to buy US$ ?

Off to the US next week, usually change cash at Travelex for the token 250 miles although am considering using my BA Amex to get more miles this time round.

Went into the local Amex travelshop earlier in the week and with no luck, apparently the 'BA Amex isn't recognised by Amex as being an Amex card'

.....but I can pay cash, Switch, MC etc etc. Basically I was told anything other than Amex, I then asked the old favourite 'Do you take Diners Club?' knowing that they probably wouldn't but praying they don't as I wouldn't have a Diners Club to produce

Also tried:
-First Choice Holidays - 'we can take it for a holiday booking if you want to make one now but not for foreign exchange'
-Thomas Cook - Gave me the 'are you barking mad?' look
-Travelex - The old 'if its a corporate Amex we can but not for personal cards'. Forgive my ignorance but if a corporate Amex card can go through the machine then why cant a personal Amex?
