I had a flight from CLT to SAN that had to divert to PHX due to fog. We had to overnight in PHX on our own dime, but at least we got the airline rate at the hotel. Unfortunately, SAN had fog issues the previous 2 nights before our flight, so the next available flight with seats for us was 3 days later. We opted to catch some sleep in the hotel, get up early and head to the rental counter and book a one way car hire. It took us about 5.5hrs to drive, but it was a damn sight quicker than waiting for a flight. We got no help on the rental which I didn't really care about, but we got a refund on the 300+ miles that we didn't get to fly. It did help to pay for some of the rental as we were on a LGW-CLT-SAN routing in Business/first on US Airways, so the refund was more than just a few dollars. Should have asked for original routing credit, but that was pre FT days for me!
