I think the biggest advantage is that you can earn points regardless of the hotel/car/flight you pick so you don't end up with "orphan points" from that one trip you had to take on UA, or that one time you had to stay at a Marriott, or had to rent from Alamo.
I don't personally think it's worth it, but some definitely do.
