That's not a gotcha. That's just basic assuming too much. If I ever find myself in the situation OP described, I'll blame myself for not clarifying the details, and not blame the hotel or SPG brand standard (which does not cover butler service for LC anyway).
The butler service at stR doesn't say anything about free coffee. Do you clarify every single time you ask for coffee? Free today, not free tomorrow?
Do you clarify if they unpack complementary? After all, they only say 2 pressings are complementary. They don't say anything else is?
do you really ask if this is free, if that is free? Really? Do you ask if the upgrade is free before you take it? Lol.
If they advertise it as butler service, and from the same chain, it better be the same butler service that guests know and use.
