There should be some availability for SYD-AKL, rather than buying a revenue ticket for this segment. There is usually a couple of business seats and a few economy seats, but i would recommend booking early or waiting 60-90 days out.
Unfortunately the business seats are only on widebody aircraft and connections from SYD aren't always great for these flights.
