You have a lot of good advice here and I've seen only a corner of Switzerland but it was so beautiful I have to recommend it- Lugano. Here's a page from our Web site (non-commercial, no pop-ups):

I picked this city when my husband and I planned a trip to Milan and couldn't get a free Hilton Reward stay the first night. It was an easy 1-hour train trip from Milan, with lots of beautiful mountains on the way.

We did encounter a restaurant where the staff spoke only Italian. (I tested them out in English, German and French. Nada.) But when we discovered after opening the wine we'd ordered that they didn't actually serve dinner for another hour (we were jet-lagged and had planned on an early dinner), I paged through my Italian phrase book and put together a written request that they keep the wine for us and we'd be back in an hour. We had a nice walk and when we returned our wine was there, with a stopper to keep the air out. All's well that ends well.
