That's because Australia to NZ is priced in NZ$ if you use the .co.nz site.

Up until around 2-3 years ago you couldn't do this as the only way to book o/w fares from Australia to NZ was on the .com.au site (you were automatically redirected if you selected a o/w fare on the .co.nz site).

From memory it was around this time as well that Air NZ were actually charging more for return fares booked ex NZ than they were for the purchase of 2 o/w fares on the .co.nz site. You could save money on a return trip simply by booking them as two o/w fares.
