Yes, if your clear priority is flying your chosen dates in Y, and getting into J is just a nice extra, I think you're making the right choice. Opinions about the value of Economy travel (e.g. free tickets TATL/TPAC in Y wouldn't motivate me much to fly) also dramatically affect approaches to using miles. Cheers!
