I've only had one experience with Alitalia (which I booked as part of my other Delta flights to/from the US), but while it would not initially let select a seat, I went back about four weeks later and found that I could select one that actually stuck in the reservation. I hope that your experience is the same. Either way, it's a pain to book via Delta and then not be able to select your seat on a partner airline.
