If you don't re-qualify for your current Le club status level with a soft landing you only drop one status tier per year instead of potentially dropping from Platinum to Classic in one one step.

eg

no soft landing - 2017 Platinum but earned zero status points you will drop in 2018 to Classic

with a soft landing - 2017 Platinum but earned zero status points you will only drop in 2018 to Gold

Lots of airline and hotel programmes operate a soft landing in their schemes.
