This would be on instruction of the flight deck for landing on instruments - with a presumably relatively tricky landing with impaired visuals, they would not want to take the chance of interference with the aircraft systems.

Captains and FOs do not make these decisions on a whim, and there would most definitely have been very sound reasons for taking this step.

The CSM’s description sounds entirely fair and accurate to me.
