Again, just way, way too many variables. Would you feel comfortable paying $95 or 19,000 points? What about $250 or 50,000 points? In both cases, the point value is the same.

Do you have points you want to burn because you won't be staying at Hilton again for a while? Are you saving points for another trip? Do you have limits on how much you'll spend per night in case? Would you split it up with cash and points for a night?

If I'm going to a city and can get a room 2 or 3 blocks away for half the price of a room at another hotel, that to me is a better value for a stay rather than figuring out if I should spend cash or points in the more expensive hotel in the first place.

So, "40,000" points means absolutely nothing. Using an exaggerated example: 35,000 points at the Hampton Inn in Clarksville, Arkansas is definitely a worse value than 45,000 points on New Years Eve in the NYC Doubletree Times Square. But if you're trying to use 40,000 as a base, you'll seriously overconsider such an comparison.
