I guess this is an agree to disagree and a YMMV. It all depends how long the OP will be in SF and what their plans are.
Using the various parking apps it is quite easy to get an overnight spot in SF for $15 - $20 (I use SpotHero), near the hotel you are staying at. If they want to go up to Sausalito, down to Carmel, or up to Napa it would be beneficial to have a car for a day as well. The OP is from London, not Cornwall, and traffic in the SF Bay Area they would be no stranger to. After 7:30 PM it is pretty easy.
Ultimately, these are all just suggestions, and different strokes for different folks. Various people here suggest the train, the thought of that makes me cringe, the Tube it isn't.

Uber will likely be your least stressful option. You will be in better shape if you can leave after 7 PM'ish.
