I would look at positioning flights or dual-fare scenarios - look at UA ex-YVR, YYZ or try P in the direction you can't use a GPU and W/V in the direction that you can. Quite often you can find fares on UA, NH or other carries ex-YVR that are many thousands less than you'll pay from a US gateway, easily covering the cost of the extra ticket and one (safety) night at the YVR airport Fairmont.
