I definitely think the 5* option is a sensible solution, but in addition to the T30 factor, there may also be baggage transfer timing issues if you have checked luggage. My experience with Compass as an American Eagle carrier on the west coast has been one of high on-time rates. Most of the delays that I encounter at LAX have to do with morning fog. You will be arriving in the evening so arrival delays will be less of a factor (unless you end up with a day like today where So Cal is being drenched in rain - unlikely in May).
