EVA is lovely and J is absolutely better than Y. But if the goal is a trip to Japan the extra 8ish hours in transit must be considered. That's a lot of time. And if booking a separate itinerary for the onward flight that's extra expense and risk.
Why would it be an extra expense to book a separate itinerary for onward? Can't you book a roundtrip saver award as two separate one way savers for the same rate?
