On AA, I booked a flight several weeks out and 10 minutes later when I realized I had booked the wrong day ( it was 12:30 am flight and I lost track of what day I was booking) they charged me $200 to change because I had booked rather than held. One more confirmation that I am a WN guy and not an AA guy.
If I recall correctly when the original rule was implimented the arilines had to option to either allow a 24 hold or cancel within 24 hours. AA was the only major airline to select the hold option, which they changed in 2016.
