I'd have to ask the in-laws about their cards since we're only using US issued cards here. I believe Taiwan is mostly chip and signature. Coincidentally, my AmEx was
swiped for the hotel preauth in Taiwan. I settled the bill with my CSR, so I don't know if the card would have been used in a chip-and-signature transaction upon checkout.
