It's possible they ferried in another crew (waiting to take that plane out from JFK, or on another overnight crew from one of their other airports) over to ORD to continue that flight.
Back in my JI days, we once had a QF 744 diversion on a SYD-LAX-NYC to RDU due to extreme WX (thunderstorms) in the Northeast. The original crew timed out, so QF ferried in a crew from JFK on a Learjet after the storms passed. Learjet pulled up next to the 744 on the cargo ramp, new crew got on the aircraft, and a few minutes later they were taxiing.
