Aside from better communication, I'm not sure what you expected.
There was a massive snowstorm with blizzard conditions. The destination airport was closed. Hotel rooms were scarce at the diverted airport. You were on an international airline with little operations in the US, so not much opportunity for recovery.
Once it was clear that JFK was closed until 7am, I would have focused on finding my own hotel room on my own dime, and fight about the cost later. Self-help requires more out of pocket expense (which may or may not be reimbursed), but it makes it far more likely that you get a good night's sleep.
Personally, I'm impressed you got out the next am and on the early side. Would have thought the crew would time out.
