AS transcon prices are almost double those of UA and it is practically impossible to get an upgrade on AS at the time of booking (even on eligible fares), but almost always possible to do so on UA on any fare. The only advantage to AS is that they fly non-stop transcons, but I personally would much rather fly to SFO on UA in first and then do the transcon in biz (for half the money) than to fly a nonstop transcon in coach on AS.

Food for thought:
SEA-IAD UA Walk-up: 860
AS Y fare: 665
UA First: 1354
AS First: 915
These routes are very popular and lower fares sell very quick. However, our business fares are much more friendly, and the most you'll pay, in this market, for coach on AS is $665 each way. Compare that to UA's Y fare of $1354. It's the same story in all T-Con markets. T-Con flights have had no food service reductions and now include inflight entertainment.
