I was under the impression that taxes on the show could be repaid as BA themselves won't be paying them. Regardless, that I guess is secondary and something to pursue once back in the U.K.
Your strategy might work (i.e. protect the seat for longer) but if the flight is full it will still be allocated once check-in closes (or shortly thereafter). Personally, I would advise AGAINST doing this as you might find that all of your checked bags do not get loaded because you are on the same booking reference (this would be the case if the ground handlers hold back your bags "waiting" for the 4th person to arrive, and then at the last minute do not load them for any number of reasons (and trust me, this is a REAL possibility)), and, it is dishonest.
