I would suggest an extra layer of packaging. The original manufacturer's packaging is often not suitable for rough and tumble transit, and instead just containerisation where the goods are tightly packed together and don't move.

As for whether you're crazy, yes you are. However, so was I for checking an iMac in October. I did, however, wrap the original box in bubble wrap and then put it in a suitcase. External box still took a whack, but the computer was fine.
