Sounds like you bought Basic Economy tickets(the cheapest ones), those are the rules for that fare, you do not get to pick your seat. If you wanted your family together you needed to buy regular coach seats.
But the question is why would AA not seat families in Basic Economy together if the seats are available?
Are they punishing families for purchasing a product they offer (in fact a product they ballyhoo as example of their low, low fares)?
