When I had the Hopper split up (a very manually constructed itinerary), I would see one of the following:

United Economy (V) (R class requested)
- a second set of segments in
United Business (R) with a big red banner
!This segment is waitlisted
- nothing
It varied seemingly randomly each time I loaded the page, although refreshing usually didn't change it (so there was some kind of caching going on). I'm pretty sure the underlying system always has a second segment added to the PNR, and the display system will attempt to resolve that to existing segments and instruments as much as possible. This is consistent also with the time that I had an IN class waitlist which showed as a separate segment with the red banner -- because the agent had screwed up and waitlisted me for IN on the wrong day (when fixed it went to IN class requested).
